The Author

"I write the books I was afraid to read."
Subhransu Panda (born 1984) is a distinguished Indian author writing in Odia and a literary entrepreneur whose work has become a defining force in contemporary Odia literature. With thirteen published titles spanning novels, short stories, poetry, and editorial collaborations, he is widely recognized for introducing bold, experimental narrative forms grounded in the sociopolitical and cultural realities of Odisha.
Panda made his literary debut with the novel Susamachara (2012), a dark, provocative satire on religious evangelism and exploitation in Odisha, written in a distinctive biblical narrative mode. Often cited as the first Indian novel to critically examine religious evangelism through experimental fiction, Susamachara announced a new, risk-taking voice in Odia prose. In the same year, he published his poetry collection Suitcase (2012), marking his simultaneous emergence as both novelist and poet.
His second novel, Silpa Bhagabata (2014), set against the backdrop of Odisha's neo-industrialization, weaves themes of love, loss, and the emotional cost of rapid economic change. Regarded as the first Odia novel to take industrialization itself as the central narrative concern, it foregrounds the impact of large-scale economic shifts on human relationships and local communities. His third novel, Itara (2021), is a landmark work portraying the lives and struggles of the transgender community in Odisha and is widely acknowledged as the first Odia novel centered on third-gender identity and marginalization.
His fourth novel, Dosamali (2026), explores the lives of tribal communities caught between the competing political and commercial interests of two states, depicting how people living on a disputed borderland lose their identity and voice.
In addition to his novels, Panda has authored the short-story collections Gapa (2013) and Bisarjana (2023), and the collaborative short-story collection Parba (2010). He has also edited several influential volumes, including the anthologies Deha (2008) and Desa (2024). His coffee-table book Odia: Journey of a Language is the first such work devoted to documenting the history, evolution, and cultural significance of the Odia language.
Panda is the recipient of numerous prestigious literary honors in recognition of both his early promise and his sustained contribution to Odia letters. His novel Itara received the Akshaya Upanyasa Puraskara (2024) from the Pratibha Ray Foundation, while his short-story manuscript Gapa earned the State Youth Award (2007–08) from the Government of Odisha. Among his other recognitions are the Bhubaneswar Pustakamela Rabi Patnaik Galpa Puraskara (2014), The Sunday Indian Youth Achievement Award (2012), Prabasi Bhasa Sammana (2016), Pathani Samanta Sahitya Puraskara (2017), Brahmapura Sahitya Sammana (2018), and the Shrie Award (2023).
Beyond creative writing, Panda has played a pivotal role in shaping Odia publishing and literary culture. Journalism and publishing have been his twin professions: he worked for over a decade as a journalist with leading newspapers and television networks in Odisha before moving fully into publishing and literary entrepreneurship in 2015. He is the Founder-Director of Odia Media Private Limited and has led PEN IN BOOKS, one of Odisha's prominent publishing brands, since 2006; PEN IN BOOKS now functions as an imprint of Odia Media Private Limited.
